This program provides comprehensive training in the area of furniture upholstery. Students learn professional techniques required to explore and establish an upholstery business, or add the activity to an existing workroom. With more than twenty years experience in the art of upholstery, the instructor shares trade secrets, tool and supply resources, and provides the support and motivation to build confidence. Each day’s activities progress at the pace of the individual student as each is challenged to tear down and completely reupholster a wing chair project of their own. Extensive training is provided in the areas of spring tying, webbing, padding, fabric selection, pattern placement, cut plans, cushion fabrication and skirt construction. Machine and hand sewing is required, no previous experience with industrial equipment is necessary. All materials and supplies are provided. Students have the option to purchase the chair frame provided by the school, or bring a wing chair of their own to work on in the class. This program also covers upholstery techniques for Inside Backs of chairs and couches by developing patterns and learning application techniques for attached pillow-backs, channel back, and barrel chairs as well as split-back and deep tufted pieces. Also covered will be multiple styles of cushions cushion fillers and furniture types, as they pertain to upholstery.
